Henry Hudson
Henry Hudson
was an English navigator who was hired by an English company to find a waterway
from Europe to Asia. After having two
unsuccessful expeditions in 1607 and 1608, Hudson embarked a third time in 1609
on behalf of the Dutch East India Company.
He traveled up a large river, which later became Hudson River, but could
not find a channel to Asia. He undertook a fourth voyage in 1610; this time, his ship floated through Hudson
Bay for many months. He became prey to
mutiny by his crew and was left stranded in the middle of the vast bay with no supplies. Nevertheless, Hudson’s discoveries led to the
establishment of Dutch colonies around Hudson River and land claims in Canada
by the English.
